Nduwira & Duku

Hand-printed head wraps

Concept • Textile experimentation • Hand printing • Construction • Visual development

Project Overview

Nduwira and Duku are a series of hand-printed head wraps exploring textile, craft and cultural expression through making.

Developed in collaboration with award-winning textile artist Judy Scott, the project centres hands-on experimentation with printing techniques and haberdashery to create pieces rooted in Black culture and identity.

  • Working directly with textile processes, I explored surface design, pattern placement and material response through print. The focus was on learning through making, understanding how fabric, ink and construction interact to shape both form and meaning.

The head wraps were developed as wearable objects, balancing function, symbolism and visual impact.

  • Head wraps hold deep cultural significance within Black communities, functioning as markers of identity, care and heritage.
Nduwira and Duku reinterpret these forms through contemporary textile exploration, honouring tradition while experimenting with print, texture and finish.

  • The completed pieces were exhibited as part of a public exhibition at Overgate Shopping Centre, Dundee, positioning the work within a commercial and cultural space.

    The project demonstrates:

    • Hands-on textile and print experience

    • Material exploration through experimentation

    • An understanding of cultural storytelling through fashion objects

    • The ability to translate concept into physical, wearable outcomes
